Nicholas Gael is a woman owned fashion and style design company, creating handmade bags and accessories for fun and fashionable people! Each one of us has a story that impacts the world around us and in turn each bag we create starts with just such a story and is designed to be a part of our positive impact in the world we travel together.
Why though? Nicholas Gael was born out of a need to continually explore identity, role, and contribution for not only family and community, but also self. Following university, I entered the technology industry as a programmer and database administrator. During a hiatus in the early years of my children’s lives, I formed my first company, a photography company, in 2006 out of a need to express myself and to contribute to my family and the families of others while raising my own young children. Now that they’re almost grown and my role in their lives is changing, I felt a need to explore both the creative and business sides of who I am again, while expanding on how I not only focus on myself, but also the community around me.
What happened next I think was a shock to everyone around me. I started sewing. Wait, what? Something I’d never done in my entire life, and frankly, had no desire to do. It just didn’t seem like my cup of tea. My daughter is incredibly creative and loves to sew. She’ll draw up a dress and an hour later (yes that fast!) she’s cut it and sewn it. One day I said, “hey, can you show me how to use that?” That, being the sewing machine. She showed me the basics and guess what? I liked it! And just like that, I was off. I was instantly addicted. And what would become my favorite thing to make? Bags. Yup, I’m a bag junkie. I love them. All kinds of them. Always have, always will! (Ask my mom about the shopping bags. Oh, and she’s a bag junkie too.) And guess what? I married a bag junkie and had bag junkie kids!
How did Bags for a Cause come about? I love to give back. I started giving back through my photography company, volunteering for the Hydrocephalus Foundation and Seattle Children’s Hospital, and in recent years, I started volunteering for a local Pedaling for Parkinson’s group so it was a natural evolution to continue to do something to contribute with Nicholas Gael. The idea of tying a charity to a bag seemed like a great way to give back but also be able to donate to various causes!
I have a story. My company and our bags have a story. Let us tell our stories to each other as we create new ones together!
Not only does each bag have a story, each bag is handmade in Washington, each handle is hand cut and dyed. Every step of the process from ideation, to design, to sourcing of the materials, to environmental footprint, to packaging has been considered. It's been loved from its inception and is just waiting to be loved by you.
For years we have been giving back and knew when we started Nicholas Gael that we wanted to come up with a creative way to do so with our bags so we came up with Bags for a Cause! For every bag purchased, we donate to a cause which inspired the design. Each bag design is inspired by a person, organization, memory or circumstance and a matching cause is selected as the recipient of the donation.
